Thomas goes to school and Ann goes to Walmart

Well, the dreaded day finally arrived and Thomas hopped on that school bus with Kate, the daughter of the other Fulbrighter -- of course I was too slow to snap a photo of 2 embarrassed preteens, but I did get the bus. Thomas survived the first day, but the unfamiliarity of everything is finally gotten the best of him, and he had a hard night around here. I have tied to convince him with my adult wisdom that things always get better if you let them, keep trying, etc. BUT he is not impressed.

In other developments today, my desperation for a high chair for Sophia has finally driven me to the Evil Empire, that haven of expatriates and Chinese alike. I told Deborah that she had to take my picture because no one would believe I was actually shopping at a Walmart after my frequent speeches about their union busting and price gouging tactics. Michael pointed out that there are no independent labor unions here anyway. And let me tell you, having Sophia somewhere other than my lap for the first time in 2 weeks was terrific.

We also met a graduate student from the school of philosophy who took Michael around campus and we ran into them near the lake, a lovely green place on campus, with beautiful palm trees and flowers

It's always scary doing new things. I personally think Thomas going to a new school in China is way scarier than Ann going to Walmart, but to each his own!
This was my first time reading your blog (well I only read part of it, but will try to do better as you are doing great at writing in it).
Hope we can come visit in the spring.

Sophia and Helen look adorable in the dresses -- I'm soooo glad they're getting used!
